CYCLE hubs in Cowes and Newport have been officially launched by the IW Council, Community Action Isle of Wight and Red Funnel.
The Newport Cycle Hub — installed by Community Action IW — is next to the Riverside Centre, Newport, and the Cowes Cycle Hub — installed by Red Funnel — is next to the Red Jet terminal.
It is hoped the hubs will encourage commuters to cycle to work along the three mile Cowes to Newport cycle track.
The installation of the hubs is one of 11 projects that have been delivered through the IW Council’s Sustainable Travel Transition Year programme, with funding from the Department for Transport.
Both hubs are both fully enclosed, with 24 hour CCTV, and each include a universal repair stand and a range of tools.
The Cowes Hub has storage for 72 bikes, while the Newport Hub has capacity for 16 bikes.
The Newport Hub also includes lockers, as well as access to shower facilities in the Riverside Centre.
Tim Thorne, a member of the CycleWight committee, said: “CycleWight have been campaigning for these facilities for a long time so they are good to see. They will help people travel in a more sustainable way, which is important for the Island."
