Day units and loos set for sale

By Martin Neville - Friday, July 30, 2010
FOUR buildings used for mental health day services on the Island are on a council hit list to be sold.
Parklands Resource Centre, Cowes, is set to shut and is earmarked for residential development or will provide expansion potential for Cowes County Primary.
Other centres facing the axe are the Avenues Day Centre, Freshwater, Riboleau House, Ryde, and the Church View Day Centre, Ventnor.
The Isle of Wight Council confirmed the buildings were due to be shut with their services transferred to other locations.
The Isle of Wight Council’s acting director of community services, Mark Howell, said: "This is not about cutting services but delivering them from more suitable locations and generating revenue to invest in priority council services."
The Island’s 71 public loos are also currently under the microscope.
The review could result in some being scrapped or possibly taken over by town and parish councils.
In total, the council has also earmarked 50 buildings and parcels of land for possible disposal and/or redevelopment as part of its 2010 Strategic Asset Management Plan. The plan aims to weed out under-utilised buildings and those deemed not fit for purpose.
The authority will also investigate the development potential of Newport’s New Street car park and the county records office, at Hillside.
And council meetings could be held at the Guildhall, under other options being considered.
The council has 30 offices, which cost around £9.1 million to run. The repair backlog stands at £57 million.
• A council spokesman was unable to indicate where mental health day units might be relocated to.
