Death crash victim named

A MAN who was killed in a road traffic collision in Godshill on Saturday night has been named by police.

Andrew David O’Neill was pronounced dead at the scene after a collision involving his wheelchair and a Vauxhall Frontera 4x4. The driver of the Vauxhall has been arrested.

The collision happened at approximately 10.40pm on Newport Road.

Mr O’Neill, 32, from Godshill, was formally identified by next-of-kin yesterday (Sunday).

A post-mortem examination is due to be held later this week.

The Vauxhall driver, a 27-year-old man from Rookley, Isle of Wight, was not injured.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and later bailed until November 28, pending further enquiries.

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Sergeant Darren Ord of Hampshire Constabulary’s Road Death Investigation Team at Eastleigh by phoning 101 and quoting Operation Bellino.
