FOLLOWING the killing of two police officers in the line of duty in Manchester yesterday (Tuesday), MP Andrew Turner has called for a debate on the death penalty.
Mr Turner was invited to take part in a phone-in debate on the issue this morning (Wednesday) on Radio 5 live, hosted by Nicky Campbell, having previously spoken in favour of the re-introduction of capital punishment.
Following the show, Mr Turner said: "This is an issue that is regularly discussed by the public, but not by parliament. I believe it is something that parliament should debate."
He did not comment on what should happen following yesterday’s killing of PC Nicola Hughes and PC Fiona Bone, but said: "My personal opinion is that the death penalty should be an option to judges in some cases, such as child killers, terrorists and those who kill police officers in the line of duty."
