ELMS-5

Are Cosmos feeling the pressure at the top of the table?

With only a one point lead over Panorama it sure looks like it.

Maybe if they stop going on holiday, their jet lag wouldn't interfere with their football!

Statpro have now moved into third place and are now on equal points as Panorama. Who will come out winners next week when the boys have to play each other?

Will Statpro steal those important three points to put them into second place?

With two games in hand, Panorama look the more promising team for the runners-up spot but we are still in the early stages of the competition, anything could happen!

ANGLING

Hall makes the long haul at Longmore

Sunday saw perhaps the last glorious day of the year with enough warmth to bring fish up in the water in the later stages of Epsom Angling Society's match on Longmore Farm Lake, Near Bracknell. A good fishery which restricts bait to just the traditional offerings, no groundbait at all allowed - it certainly did not fish the worse for it.

Match winner was Martin Hall with a fine bag of carp and tench totalling just under the magic 40lbs, 39lbs 14ozs in all. Fishing the long pole, Hall loose fed maggots throughout, catching his tench earlier on the bottom with the carp up in the water towards the end of the five hour session.

Runner up was Norman Youldon, who never seems out of the frame these days with a similar bag for 33lbs 2ozs. Youldon concentrated on red maggot presentation each time dipped in Tutti-Frutti essence for extra attraction.

Third was Mark Fryer, his 28lbs 8ozs mixed bag falling to caster fished right up against the inside reed beds.

Fourth was the club's top youngster Anthony Hamilton, who kept loose feeding maggots tirelessly all day for 19lb 13ozs.

Unfortunately, he probably lost the match winning fish when hooking into and playing for sometime a massive carp which eventually smashed his pole or it should be said his grandfather's pole!

In contrast last of the 23 who fished was Russell Alexander with just 1lb 30zs.

From here on the fishing for the rest of the season will become harder, the next match being on the Basingstoke Canal next Sunday, and with first frosts promised this week looks set to be a grueller.

HOCKEY

Webber on form

For a second successive weekend the two local English Hockey League clubs experienced the opposite end of playing fortunes.

In division one Long Ditton-based Surbiton kept up their 100% record with a convincing 3-0 home victory over Isca from Exeter, at Sugden Road on Sunday.

This club previously boasted two wins out of two.

From a host of open-play chances Andy Webber scored twice, in the eighth and 44th minute and Simon Tinkler in the 55th.

The home club also squandered eight penalty corner awards and the game might have had an even falser scoreline if the Devonians hadn't had a goal controversially disallowed in the second half.

So Surbiton continue to lead the league, having scored one more and conceded one less than still second place Stourport, who won 6-1 at Indian Gymkhana.

By contrast Teddington slipped to a second successive defeat in the premier division, losing 1-3 at Reading.

Once again they conceded two late goals, 57th and 62nd minute penalty corners, after Tony Colclough's 32nd minute open-play effort had made it 1-1 at the interval following Reading's eight minute opener.

Teddington look like struggling to improve on their current seventh place in the 12 team league.

Not surprising with their current international and captain Brett Garrard injured, and former GB captain Jason Laslett and England U21 player Jon Hauck both out studying for exams, plus another former international player, Nick Conway, coaching in the United States.

In the South premier league games on Saturday Wimbledon won 4-1 at newly-promoted Old Cranleighans, with Andrew Cruickshanks and Rob Stone getting two apiece after OCs had taken the lead.

Previously-unbeaten Richmond lost 0-1 at home to Old Whitgiftians.

WIMBLEDON LADIES

Ladies must turn game around

Wimbledon Ladies 1, Leyton Orient 3

Wimbledon Ladies (U14) 3, Crystal Palace 0

Wimbledon Ladies (U12) 3, Kent Magpies 1

Premier League Wimbledon Ladies, defeated again, now must be asking themselves what can they do to change the tide of disappointing results.

Despite a great goal from Rae McRickus things need to improve - quick. However the U14s proved once again they're a force to be reckoned with. An easy but well executed win over Palace brought two goals from Hannah Dare and one from Kelly Creates.

The U12s also enjoyed a win in a fast and competitive game. Brave Magpies finally run out of ideas and watched two splendid goals from Shiloh Beale and one from Emma Saunders.
