NEWPORT Roman Villa is to re-open later this month after work on a new roof on the cover building.
The villa, in Cypress Road, was closed on April 6 and will re-open on Saturday, May 23, after work aimed at protecting the villa, including its mosaics and baths, from the elements.
It was planned the villa would open again this Thursday, but because of the extent of the building work, the date has been moved back to allow more time.
"The works are vital to secure the future of the villa, which attracts over 5,000 visitors every year," Isle of Wight Council assistant director of economic and tourism development John Metcalfe said.
"Further necessary works have been identified during the construction of the roof.
"Because of the nature and complexity of the work to fit the new roof, and the importance of protecting the mosaics and baths, this type of project takes more time than a usual roof project.
"The council apologises for the small delay in the re-opening of the attraction but I am sure residents and visitors would rather the work was done properly than rushing ahead to get it finished."
The project is jointly funded by English Heritage and Isle of Wight Council.
