FEARS that Wycombe's only forum for workers rights could crumble were allayed this week.

Champions of workers rights, Wycombe Trades Union Council (WTUC), faced a crisis unless organisational help was offered at the AGM at the end of last month.

Members said a WTUC collapse would spell catastrophe for workers and the community.

But two members saved the day when they stepped up to fill vacancies.

Don Dolby, president of WTUC, said: "It was a crucial time for us and there was a real fear that we may not be able to continue.

"But now we can start moving in a positive direction and can continue to provide a voice in the local community. People always need a voice in the workplace and if we folded it would have been a catastrophe for workers in the district.

"Trade unions are as important now as they ever were. We are certainly a voice that makes a difference."

Falling membership over the past few years led to the crisis. Representatives from union branches across the district discuss issues facing workers at regular meetings and take action when needed.

"When necessary we lobby Government and take part in national demonstrations but a lot of our work is more closer to home," added Mr Dolby.

He pointed to the WTUC's landmark campaign 'Hands off our Homes' in January 2001.

Delegates launched the pressure group to fight controversial Wycombe District Council plans to sell off 155 properties in the Star Blocks estate in High Wycombe despite tenants' objections.
