EXCAVATIONS are taking place at BAE Systems in Newport Road, Cowes, before the construction of the Aldi supermarket.
The site was recently given planning permission for commercial and industrial development and a condition was an archaeological evaluation must take place.
The work will take place before specialists remove two Second World War pipemines, which were laid to prevent German landings.
