DISRUPTION is likely to continue throughout the morning today (Thursday), after a burst main led to gridlock on some Newport roads last night.

The main, in Staplers Road, Newport, burst at around 4pm, causing long tailbacks in Newport.

A Southern Water spokeswoman said Staplers was open coming into Newport, but there was a short diversion coming out of the town.

"The repairs have been carried out and the water is back on. We hope to have the road reinstated by early afternoon," she said.

*According to the Isle of Wight Council the road, which is currently closed to traffic travelling out of Newport, is due to be fully re-opened by around 3pm today (Thursday).
