THE parent company of Isle of Wight school’s catering provider Chartwells is DNA testing its processed meat after traces of horse were found in a burger product linked to one of its suppliers.
Compass Group said the trace of horse DNA was found in burgers supplied to a number of sites in the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. The product was not supplied to anywhere in the United Kingdom mainland.
A company spokesman said: "We are undertaking a DNA testing programme across all our processed meat products to ensure that the integrity of the products we provide is maintained."
*An Isle of Wight Council on Monday said: "With the horsemeat scandal continuing in the UK, the council can confirm that the Island's school meals provider, Chartwells, has received confirmation from all of the suppliers it uses that no contaminated products have been supplied.
"Chartwells has also confirmed that all the necessary safeguards are in place to ensure the traceability and quality of its food."
