Dog survives cliff fall

RESCUERS from Needles Coastguard came to the aid of a dog that plunged around 70 feet down an Isle of Wight cliff yesterday (Thursday).

Rascal the springer spaniel fell down the almost sheer cliff face at Watcombe Bay, to the west of Freshwater Bay, at around 4.20pm.

He was cut off by the tide at the bottom of the cliff, leaving his owners — who were on visiting from St Albans — little option but to call for help.

A team member from Needles Coastguard was lowered down the cliff and retrieved Rascal, who was returned uninjured to his owners.

Ray Morey, of Needles Coastguard, urged dog walkers to keep their pets on a lead when walking near cliffs.
