Dog-walker airlifted to hospital

By Emily Pearce - Monday, November 30, 2009

AN ELDERLY woman, suffering from hypothermia and a fractured leg, was airlifted to hospital from Yarmouth this morning (Monday).
The ambulance service called Solent Coastguard for assistance shortly after 10am, after receiving reports of an injured woman on the beach.
It is believed she was walking her dog on the common, when she had an accident in high winds and rain.
Solent Coastguard sent a helicopter, which was in the area, on exercises, to take the elderly woman to St Mary’s Hospital.
She is currently receiving treatment at the accident and emergency department.
An off-duty ambulance controller, who happened to be passing, helped the woman at the scene.
The Needles Coast Rescue Team also attended and temporarily closed part of the main Newport-to-Yarmouth road.
