Dolphin calf washes up on Compton beach

Monday, November 7, 2016 - 9:57

UPDATED 1PM
A HARBOUR porpoise washed up on Compton beach on Sunday morning.

Its body was found by Mark Hitchcock and his daughter, Callie, while on a surfing lesson.

Mark, from Godshill, said: "It was quite high up the beach, so it must have died very recently and come in on the last high tide as it showed no signs of decomposing."

*Stephan Voigt, Isle of Wight co-ordinator for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, contacted the County Press to say it was actually a harbour porpoise, rather than a dolphin calf as originally thought.

He said the body had been recovered and would be transferred to London tomorrow for the Zoological Society of London to carry out a post mortem.

He believes the not yet fully grown female showed some signs of malnutrition, but had no other obvious injuries that could have caused its death.
