Emergency crews trying to salvage the sinking vessel. Picture by Maritime and Coastguard Agency
THIS picture was taken soon after a fisherman was rescued from his sinking boat, on Sunday afternoon.
The angler, from Lee-on-the-Solent, jumped into his life raft when his 25-foot fishing boat started to take on water, two miles off St Catherine's Point.
He was picked up by a nearby ship as his vessel sank minutes later.
The ex-navy man was uninjured but suffering from shock and alerted Solent Coastguard before abandoning his vessel and launching a red flare.
This was spotted by the offshore patrol vessel Port Of Spain — designed by BAE systems for use in Trinidad and Tobago.
It was on trials at the time and launched a fast response craft to collect him.
The rescue also involved the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter and the Yarmouth RNLI all weather lifeboat.
Ventnor Coastguard rescue team was also called out.
