A 92-year-old driver is seriously ill in hospital today after a crash at a well-known accident blackspot on Mersley Down.
The man and his 90-year-old wife, from Bembridge, were in a blue Peugeot 206 which collided with a red Ford Fiesta at the junction of the Downs Road and Knighton Shute at around 4.45pm yesterday (Tuesday).
The couple were cut free from their car by firefighters, placed on spinal boards and taken to St Mary's Hospital where they are in a serious but stable condition.
The occupants of the Fiesta, both from Newport, were a 12-year-old girl and her mother. The child was treated in hospital for minor injuries and discharged last night. Her mother, 38, was uninjured.
It was the second accident at the junction in a matter of days.
Last Saturday one person was taken to hospital following a collision between a car and a van, causing the car to overturn. Firefighters cut free an occupant from one of the vehicles.
