DRIVERS have been warned to take care after a number of crashes during icy conditions tonight (Tuesday).

Newport Police said on Twitter that they had been called to four crashes this evening and there had been many reports of ice on the roads.

Two crashes occurred on the Middle Road and others were reported at Ashey Road, Ryde and Stroud Wood Road, Ryde.

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called to the Stroud Wood Road collision at 8.25pm and helped to make the scene safe.

Southern Vectis said ice was particularly bad in the Whitecliff Bay area, near Bembridge.

Not just icy conditions, there are a very large number of island drivers to whom the words "give way", "no entry" mean nothing and red traffic lights are thee to be ignored, some drivers just seem to pick and choose which laws they wish to obey and which parts of the highway code suit them

Drivers should take care in all conditions, not just icy ones.

It's not really about the lack of gritting, rather the lack of common sense.

The amount of cars I see tailgating or braking late/hard in this weather is horrendous! A little bit of ice and peoples brains seem to turn to mush, I hope it doesn't snow as I fear for the islands hedgerows and embankments!!

Pedestrians also need to take care in these frosty conditions. The pavements are quite slippery too.

Have the roads been gritted yet? I heard as of 10pm they had not?
