Wightlink is re-introducing a charge for vehicles using the pier.
WIGHTLINK is to make car drivers pay towards repairs to Ryde pier with the re-introduction of a charge for vehicles using the pier.
And the company has said that the pier will remain shut to vehicles until March next year – meaning it will be out of use for seven months.
The ferry company has confirmed it has secured funding for urgent repairs to make the pier safe but the £3.5 million will have to be followed by more spending.
The ferry company said the first tranche of work has already started with the temporary pedestrian walkway two thirds complete. That will enable pedestrians to continue to use the pier while repairs take place on the Grade II Listed structure.
Ironically, work is progressing to create 74 new car parking spaces that cannot be used while the pier remains shut to traffic.
Wightlink marketing manager Kerry Jackson said: "The final schedule of works has still to be confirmed, however we hope it will start as soon as possible and we are anticipating it will be completed during March 2011 – subject to English Heritage approval, weather conditions and availability of sustainable Forest Stewardship Council approved material.
"In addition to the £3.5m, further funds are required in the near future to undertake additional works to further parts of the pier structure.
"With these and higher costs associated with maintaining the listed structure, regrettably we have no option but to re-introduce the pier toll charge for vehicles once the pier is re-opened to assist with these costs.
"The toll charge has not yet been confirmed and details of the charges will be released in due course. No charge will be made for pedestrians or cyclists."
Passengers now have to pay on IslandLine trains but season and multilink ticket holders can currently travel free between Ryde St Johns and Ryde Pier Head.
• It was nine years ago that Wightlink dropped the toll, allowing a free period for cars to meet ferries.
