COASTGUARDS on the Isle of Wight had to come to the aid of a man who dropped his phone down a cliff and tried to retrieve it last night (Monday).

Coastguards from Ventnor and Bembridge were called to the man’s aid at Lake Cliff Gardens at 9.40pm.

The man, and a group of others aged in their 20s, had climbed around fencing at an area of cliff, closed since a landslip.

He dropped his phone and scrambled down to retrieve it, but could not get back up, according to coastguards — who urged people not to ignore the footpath closure.
