Early birds get the music

Janelle Monae peforming in the Big Top last night (Thursday).

THOUSANDS of early birds descended on Bestival yesterday (Thursday) for their first taste of the weekend’s fun.

Several campsite areas were full within hours of gates opening at noon and there was plenty to keep campers happy.

In the Big Top 80s electro-pop act Heaven 17, La Roux and US rising star Janelle Monae provided the soundtrack to revellers' first night on site.

The main site remained closed until today, however, there was plenty on offer for prompt party-goers.

Among the highlights was local DJ star and winner of the Plugged In Bestival DJ competition Maxx Traxx, who performed in the Cabaret tent, which was rammed with fans.

"It is brilliant. They have been playing loads of camp stuff in here and then next door there is a tent playing dubstep. There is such a mix here.

"It’s been my dream to play at this festival," said Maxx, aka Tom Eklund.
