Early-morning crash at Downend

A MAN was released from his car by firefighters following an accident at Robin Hill this morning (Tuesday).

Fire crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service released the man after being called at 6am, to Long Lane, Newport.

The road was closed while the incident was dealt with.

It was initially reported to have been a two-car collision, however firefighters found this was not the case.

Two pumps from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service went to the scene.

*The driver was admitted to hospital, where he was said to be in a stable condition, according to a spokeswoman.

At 10:13am a police spokeswoman said the road was still closed, however the upturned car was due to be recovered shortly and the road would be re-opened as soon as was safe.

She urged drivers to take care on minor or untreated roads.
