A musical event is coming to the Broadway Theatre which proves fans do not have to travel into central London to hear classical music.

The Orchestra of St Bartholomew, part of the Sydenham Music Project, will give a concert of music by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven at the theatre, in Catford, on Sunday February 10.

Lewisham Council agreed a three-year funding commitment of £120,000 to support the Sydenham Music Project. It paid for a London Orchestra Series of 12 concerts which began last September.

Conductor Robert Trory said: "Our aim is to bring music to a wider audience and let people know they can enjoy a fantastic classical concert in Catford. The Broadway Theatre is an excellent location to perform for any classically-trained musician."

The council is spending £2.3m transforming the Broadway Theatre. Improvements will include access for people with disabilities, a new foyer and box office. A launch is planned later in the year when all works have been completed.

Councillor Alyson McGarrigle said: "The council has made a commitment to support classical music within the borough and we are delighted to welcome the orchestra to the Broadway Theatre. We are doing all we can to ensure residents and visitors to Lewisham are offered the best in classical music played by excellent musicians."
