DEMONSTRATING its commitment to the environment and sustainability, Reynolds and Read is leading by example.
The Island-based plant hire, skip and recycling firm has installed a revolutionary boiler at its new premises at Brickfields, Ryde.
As the first of its kind in the UK, the boiler is not just a means of heating 10,000 litres of water of in under two hour but also an environmentally friendly money saver.
Reynolds and Read end each week with around four to five tonnes of scrap wood which, up until recently, was ending up in landfill.
The firm now uses that wood as fuel for the boiler, meaning 80 per cent of its scrap is recycled, saving upwards of £500 a week on disposal costs alone.
The self-feeding boiler was installed by another Island firm, environmental consultants Pure Green Energy, which secured the contract against national competition.
Its chairman, Danny Fisher, said: "I think this is great example of the Island being first in the country to push eco energy.
"I take my hat off to Reynolds and Read for having the willpower and resources to make this happen. It’s turning waste into warmth.
"We think it’s a very powerful message, not just for the Island, but it’s the Island leading this particular industry nationally."
Reynolds and Read director, Kieron Read, said it was a sizeable investment for both the company and the Island.
Solar panels have already been installed to power the office while future plans include underfloor heating and rainwater recovery systems.
