The evening started with both sides forming a guard of honour for the 36-year-old Dulwich defender, who this year celebrates 10 years at Champion Hill.

West Ham, managed by former Newcastle defender Glenn Roeder, fielded a side made up of the players that won last year's FA Youth cup.

Although the game ended goalless, the night belonged to Hewitt, who picked up a four figure sum from the game - which was watched by more than 400 spectators.

Hewitt said: "It was a very emotional night for me. This is only the second time ever that someone has been granted a testimonial - the last was 20 years ago.

"I was pleased with how the night went. West Ham brought down the youth side, who played very well.

"To earn a four figure sum from the night was just brilliant. I didn't expect to get that much from it.
