AN £8.7m regeneration scheme for Greenwich borough has been backed by the former Minister for the Dome at a neighbourhood renewal conference.
Minister of State, Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR) Lord Charles Falconer QC gave his "full support" to Neighbourhood Renewal Greenwich (NRG).
NRG will receive £8.7m, announced in September, over the next three years to renew the poorest areas of Greenwich and those lacking services, job opportunities and adequate transport links.
Creekside, Coldbath, Avery Hill, Coldharbour, Woolwich and Eynsham will all benefit from the scheme, which will tackle inequalities of health, social care, housing, crime and unemployment.
Lord Falconer, who is heading renewal schemes throughout England, said: "Greenwich is doing well. In 1997, Greenwich had an unemployed working age population of 11 per cent. In 2000, that figure was down to six per cent.
"The Dome acted as a catalyst for regeneration with 40 per cent of the 6,000 people working at the Dome during 2000 coming from Greenwich. The redevelopment of the peninsular will help housing and job opportunities. Other areas must not be forgotten."
