AT the Kent County Secondary Schools Swimming Championships, held in Gillingham, swimmers from Orpington Ojays represented their individual schools and enjoyed plenty of success, with several Event Best Performances.'

Gold medals were won by: Marie Heseldon (Dartford Girls Grammar), intermediate 100m breaststroke EBP; Matthew Perkins (Darrick Wood), senior 100m freestyle; Ian Colbourne (Dartford Boys Grammar) senior boys 200m individual medley EBP; Damian Edmonds (St Mary & St Josephs), intermediate 100m butterfly; Katie Bowman (Tunbridge Wells Grammar) intermediate 200m individual medley, EBP, and Charmaine Brown (Dartford Grammar) senior 200m individual medley.

Silvers: Emily Brown (Bullers Wood) intermediate girls 100m butterfly; Alex Spooner, intermediate boys 100m freestyle; Helen Chan (Newstead Wood School, won bronze in the intermediate girls 100m freestyle, while Gemma Stroud (Darrick Wood) was a fine fourth in the intermediate 200m individual medley.

The intermediate girls relay team comprising Helen Chan, Anita Oliver, Claire Marrow, Eleanor Woodward and Hannah Smith, then represented Newstead Wood, at the Bazuka National Swimming Championships at Crystal Palace.

Having qualified from divisional heats last November, the top 16 teams from England took part in the relays. Competition was extremely tough, with finishing times very close and the girls were proud to come 12th nationally for the medley relay and 10th for the freestyle relay.
