THE Internet's potential is not being realised by companies, according to business support experts.

Despite the high level of publicity, the Internet has been given, it appears businesses in Bromley are still not exploiting it to the full.

Innovation and Technology counsellor at Business Link South London Cliff Harbutt, believes businesses need to realise they firms can conduct their businesses via Internet.

He said: "People need to look at new ways they can run their business.

"A lot of business people in Bromley are not using it to full effect. Businesses need to develop an IT strategy and treat it like any other business plan."

Mr Harbutt said businessmen need to embrace the Internet and not hide from it.

He added: "People tend to chicken away from IT. That is why it is important for people in business to first get into the routine of using the Internet.

"From there they can start to appreciate the value it can give to their products and develop websites to their personal needs.

Mr Harbutt said there are thousands of internet users in the borough and sales on it are increasing rapidly.

The UK's Internet market was valued at £0.25billion in 1997.

It is estimated it will be worth £33.66billion by 2001.

Trainee engineer at Mega Byte in Beckenham Tom Maxell, said: "I do not think businesses in the local area are aware of the possibilities which are out there. To capitalise on the opportunities on the Internet, businesses need to at least have their own website."
