Just 16 months after taking up the post, Andrew Howard has announced he wants to stand as the Labour Party's parliamentary candidate in the Hampshire constituency of Romsey.

Legislation prevents NHS Trust Chairmen from contesting elections while holding office.

Mr Howard has experience of politics, having been a Labour councillor in Reigate and Banstead before he was appointed to the trust by the then Labour Health Secretary, Frank Dobson.

Speaking to the Guardian, Mr Howard said: "I am sorry to be leaving but am extremely grateful for the support I have received from everyone in an excellent trust. I wish it well for the future and am sure it will continue to go from strength to strength."
