FIREFIGHTERS from Ryde Fire Station climbed the equivalent of Everest eight times over the weekend — and raised more than £5,500 for charity.
The fundraising challenge, at Western Gardens in Ryde, saw ten firefighters — plus a few volunteers, who helped with climbing during the night — scale a ten-metre ladder from 4pm on Saturday to 4pm on Sunday.
While the team did not achieve their target of climbing Everest 13 times, they managed to climb an impressive 71,770 metres.
The money raised will be split between the Ryde Fire Station Charity Fund and The Wight Brainy Bunch, a charity which was set up by challenge organiser and firefighter Mark Grimes, following his diagnosis with a brain tumour in February 2015.
Mark, 36, of Ryde, said: “It was harder than any of us could have imagined.
“As the organiser of the event, I got called all sorts of things throughout the night — but by 4.10pm it was a different story, everyone was elated to be finished.
“All the pain and all the stress is worth it when you see what the charity will get from the challenge.”
