Fall in NEETs numbers

THE number of 16 to 19 year olds not in education, employment or training (NEETs) has fallen to its lowest level in years.

Latest figures show 4.3 per cent of young people fell into the category.

In a report the Isle of Wight Council last Wednesday, Cllr Dawn Cousins, cabinet member for children’s services and education, said: "This is the lowest figure for the Isle of Wight for a number of years and it would indicate the council’s investment in the pre-apprenticeship and other related schemes is having a positive impact."

After adjusting for falling birthrates, changing demographics and migration to the North Island, what is the position? Has there actually been a percentage fall, have figures remained broadly similar or has the figure actually risen? And how big was the fall? If the all time high was only 4.35% which has fallen over 20 years that is hardly newsworthy. Lets do a bit of Journalism here, IWCP!

A Council smokescreen the truth will be revealed once the holiday season is over and all those people working for slave labour wages are back on benefits again, the council has actually cut its investment in real terms in helping young people get into work or education

Oh please! This is called seasonal work and nothing to do with council investment. Let's see the figures in November.......
