A FALLEN power cable has led to the closure of an Isle of Wight road this morning (Wednesday).

At around 10am Island Roads said School Green Road, Freshwater, was closed from the Co-op to Moa Place due to the fallen cable and they were working to cleared it.

Island Roads said HGVs at the Co-op end of School Green Road must use Afton Road to find an alternative route back to Yarmouth.

While School Green Rd is closed, HGV vehicles requiring access to the ferry can use Bouldnor Road, Yarmouth, Island Roads said.A spokesman from Southern and Scottish Energy said the power supply to eight properties in School Green Road had been cut off while repairs were carried out. They are expected to be reconnected this afternoon.

"Our engineers are on site carrying out repairs. It is not yet know what brought the power line down. We would like to thank everyone for their patience while repairs are carried out" said the spokesman.

The cable was brought down when a lorry clipped the pole it was attached to, according to a police spokesman.

* The road re-opened at around 2.30pm according to Island Roads.
