Family from Iowa traces Isle of Wight roots

AN American family made a sentimental journey to a historic Island inn to trace its roots.

Vicki Gray, from Davenport, Iowa, discovered her great grandparents, George and Ann Hayles, owned Niton’s Buddle Inn in the late 1800s and her grandfather and his siblings were born there.

Vicki said: "After the folks moved to America they never got back to visit the Isle of Wight.

"But I took up the cause and got a family party together to make the trip."

Buddle manager Mandi O’Reilly said: "How awesome that somebody would travel all the way from America to visit our little Island because their grandfather was born here."

A new beer at the pub will raise money for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

Buddle Brew has been created by Yates’ Brewery, of Newchurch, and throughout this month, the pub will donate 50p from each pint to the hospice.
