TWO stalwarts of the Island’s farming community, Shirley Moody and John Reynolds, were among guests who tucked into a mouth watering selection of Isle of Wight fare at Bluebells Cafe, Briddlesford Lodge Farm, near Wootton, on Wednesday.

The pair were joined by other guests including the Island’s Lord Lieutenant, Major General Martin White, and editor of the County Press Alan Marriott, for a slap-up breakfast as part of the annual Farmhouse Breakfast Week, which runs until tomorrow (Saturday).

Mr Reynolds, 77, and Mrs Moody were made life members of the Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society for their work in supporting the body over more than 50 years.

Mrs Moody accepted the award on behalf of her late husband, Harold, another long-time supporter of the Island’s agricultural community.

The pair are also hoping to encourage farmers to get behind the Island’s revamped annual County Show, which is due to take place on July 16.

Mrs Moody said: "It was a part of our lifestyle and the highlight of the year."

Maj Gen White praised the quality of food served at the breakfast which, he said, showed the high standard achieved by farmers on the Island.

He said: "It is a wonderful way to not only publicise what we can do on the Island but is an important link to the County Show this year."

Farmhouse Breakfast Week is supported by the National Farmers’ Union and highlights the importance of a good breakfast.

Among the events taking place was a demonstration to pupils at Brighstone Primary School on Thursday on how to make butter and a free breakfast bap for people using West Wight Sports Centre, Freshwater, on Saturday. People will be able to use the sports facilities and claim their bap between 8.30am and 11.30am.
