Ferry good friends with bugs

By County Press Reporter - Friday, April 3, 2009
Ferry good friends with bugs
A jungle nymph at close quarters.
PASSENGERS cruising to and from the Island on Red Funnel car ferry Red Eagle will have the opportunity to meet and greet some rather unusual fellow passengers from tomorrow (Saturday).
Weird and wonderful bugs from the Isle of Wight Zoo will be on board taking part in interactive sessions designed to make the voyage an experience to remember.
Red Funnel will dedicate an area of the upper deck of the Red Eagle to zoo staff so they can invite passengers to hold out their hands as a warm place of rest, or maybe even a squidgy playground for an insect or two.
Nature’s alien underworld is too often underfoot and out of mind. The zoo hopes these engaging and informative bug-handling sessions will help children to trade a ‘yuk’ for an ‘ahh’ while familiarising themselves with these funky and fascinating creatures.
• Bug-handling sessions are scheduled for 10.30am, 1.30pm and 4.30pm East Cowes departures and noon, 3pm and 6pm Southampton departures tomorrow (Saturday), and 8.30am, 11.30am and 2.30pm East Cowes departures and 10am, 1pm and 4pm Southampton departures on Sunday, Good Friday, and next Saturday, April 11.
