DIY enthusiasts and homemakers have been reminded by the council they may need approval for building work.
Head of building control at Bromley Council Stephen Moore says while most people realise they need planning permission for major tasks, many do not realise even minor alterations may need the go-ahead from the building control surveyor.
He added: “Our surveyors have to approve and inspect work such as knocking through internal walls and removing chimney breasts to ensure the house is structurally safe.”
Householders who have work done without permission could face legal action.
Anyone doing alterations should call the building control department on 020 8313 4313 beforehand.
