Festival boss praises crowd’s good spirits

UPDATED SATURDAY 11:38*

THE organiser of the Isle of Wight Festival this afternoon (Friday) declined to underline an earlier promise to refund the tickets of those caught up in traffic chaos who went home.

John Giddings praised the good spirits of those at the event, although admitted he did not know how many had not made it.

After spending many hours in their cars, unable even to get to the Isle of Wight for hours because roads and ferries were choked, mainland festival-goers posted messages on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook to say they had turned around and returned home.

The main festival carpark access was so muddy some vehicles had to be towed in by tractor. Queues built-up to such an extent that Portsmouth to Fishbourne car ferries could not dock.

Mainland motorists were diverted and if they got to the Island they sat, gridlocked, in traffic for hours.

Festival promoter John Giddings responded in a radio interview today that their £190 camping tickets would be refunded if people returned them to him.

He told BBC Radio Solent: "If you’ve got your ticket I have to refund you if you send it back to me...

"If someone has suffered that I don’t believe I should keep their money, what do you think...?"

But, several hours later, after traffic congestion had eased through a series of contingency measures including opening-up fresh car parking away from the Seaclose site, he refused to underline his radio commitment.

Asked whether refunds would be given, Mr Giddings would only repeat that people could now get to the festival.

Mr Giddings apologised for the hours of delay suffered by people trying to get into the festival site, caused by torrential rain which led to tracks sinking into the mud.

At one stage he was helping to marshal traffic and praised the good humour and supportiveness of those attending and said that no contingency plan in the world short of covering the site in tarmac could have succeeded.

"We are now looking to a positive festival enjoyed by 55,000 people. I have no idea how many people returned home, but my message is that they could get here," he said.

Morwenna said:" I have known since last Sunday what the weather would be, so maybe a park-and-ride should have been implemented, but get real, these peole are camping and have a lot of stuff. "
And "The idea on Facebook that cars should be banned is just unrealistic."
Not to these numpties Mrwenna!
They will suggest that festis should have gone by electric bikes, as they were available on site, albeit that you could not use them.
Everybody knew the weather forcast, Giddings included.
They CHOSE to ignore it, carry on regardless and made a complete pigs ear of it.
The entrance was so ploughed up that it was impossible to get in
This should be the last year that this happens.
"Greenest Festival"? Yeah! Right! With a seven hour traffic jam polluting the island!

perhaps now the powers that be can see the crass stupidity of building to many new houses the roads cannot cope with traffic now and we have insufficient police to manage

You can feel the anger and negativity coming off this page of comments. I do sympathise with everyone that has suffered, but personal attacks usually happen when no proper argument can be put forward. let's begin by looking on the positive side. No-one has definitively said that a refund will not be forthcoming. It seems to me more like communication breakdown. The festival has been sold out for sometime, the opening times were published and that and the ferry booking times should have given an indication of 'peak flow' so to speak. I have known since last Sunday what the weather would be, so maybe a park-and-ride should have been implemented, but get real, these peo;le are camping and have a lot of stuff. The idea on Facebook that cars should be banned is just unrealistic. Imagine in reverse, you are going to Glastonbury, without a car! If you want people to bring revenue to the Island then you cannot resent them making a profit, some of the comments here are just venomous. If have al

I bet all the festival goers who turned around and went home never get a refund. He's just said people can get to the festival now, so he's covered his back, that's probably his loophole. Same as all the islanders who lost money through not getting to work and all the island businesses who lost money through his utter incompetence and lack of planning will never see a penny compensation. He is just a horrid greedy man who has no thought for anyone except himself and his wallet! Oh and on the comment about him marshaling traffic, so he should be its his c**k up why should all the other people be there sorting it out on his behalf and not him.

Saw south today and sally trying to interview j.giddings.He has changed his tune NO REFUNDS.All he said festival is open,a very arrogant person whom should know better. If people didnt get to festival then they are entitled to full refunds. So would recommend to sue J.Giddings and solo enterprise for refunds. He is arrogant and if he cant run it properly then no return for festival in 2013.Next time Mr Giddings get the islanders permission for the festival.A conference needs to held with Mr Giddings/police/council and a panel of isle of wight residents before anymore festivals are arranged.
