Fight for the Wight: Jeremy Irons joins the fight

Friday, April 22, 2016 - 8:50

'HORRIFIED’ by the impact of cuts on the Isle of Wight, Island-born actor Jeremy Irons has this week backed the Fight for the Wight Campaign — which has been signed by more than 6,500 people.

The Isle of Wight County Press contacted the multi-award winning actor in a bid to secure his support — highlighting the dire financial crisis which threatens vital public services on the Isle of Wight, his birthplace.
The 67-year-old, who was born in Cowes, sent a message of support on Wednesday.

He said: "I was horrified to read of the problems endemic in my beloved birthplace and I wish all success to those fighting to improve existing conditions on the Island."

Mr Irons is currently appearing at the Bristol Old Vic in Eugene O’ Neill’s masterpiece, 'A Long Day’s Journey Into Night’.

His most recent big screen appearance was as the butler, Alfred, in 'Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice'.

Isle of Wight County Press deputy editor Rachael Rosewell said: "It's great that Jeremy, as a true Islander, has joined our fight for more money for public services on the Island."
