Fight for the Wight: Meeting to highlight Isle of Wight's budget crisis

Wednesday, June 15, 2016 - 12:37

PEOPLE can find out more about Fight for the Wight at a public meeting on Saturday.
Isle of Wight County Press editor Alan Marriott will be speaking about the campaign at the Riverside Centre, Newport, at an event hosted by the Isle of Wight Society.
Entitled The Financial Future of the Isle of Wight, it will be a chance for people to find out more about the budget crisis facing the Isle of Wight Council and its impact on town and parish councils, businesses and services, such as health and housing.
Mr Marriott said: "The situation facing the Island is incredibly serious — it's no exaggeration to say without extra help from the government, the council could be bankrupt next year.
"I would urge everyone to come along, get involved and sign the Fight for the Wight petition, calling on the government to give the Island a fair deal. We need to show the government how much we care about our vital public services."
Other speakers include Island councillors Steve Stubbings and Julia Baker-Smith, Ventnor Town councillor and veteran funding campaigner Harry Rees, businessman Steve Porter and Charlotte Eisenhart, of the Association of Local Councils.
The event takes place between 12.30pm and 4.45pm, with a question and answer session at 3.45pm.
It has been organised by the Isle of Wight Society, which is affiliated to Civic Voice, to mark National Civic Day.
