Fight for the Wight: Road safety campaigner's fears over funding

Saturday, April 9, 2016 - 15:30

NEAL Staley, founder of road safety campaign Isle Drive Safe — Remember Evey, supports the Fight for the Wight campaign.
Neal, whose daughter ten-year-old Evey, was tragically killed by a drink and drug-impaired driver in a road accident, is fighting cuts to the road safety budget.
He said: "We all know how desperate the financial situation is regarding budgetary demands and we feel that by working together we can assist with certain issues, which, primarily for us, is road safety.
"It’s vitally important the Island secures further funding to alleviate pressures on budgets. The fact road safety is one of the areas to be cut is quite disturbing given that, sadly, we have too many serious incidents on our roads.
"Isle Drive Safe — Remember Evey is pleased to support Fight for the Wight as since our inception as an Island-based charity, community spirit and ownership of certain problems has been at the forefront of our aims.
"Getting people driving on the Island to slow down, drive to the conditions, not to drink and drive, not to use phones at the wheel, are all things we should be doing as a community anyway and we’d like Islanders to commit to upholding the highest standards and that means by adhering to them and not being reticent about reporting offenders.
"Isle Drive Safe — Remember Evey is committed to Fight for the Wight and will continue to campaign for safer roads."
