I wonder if Peter Jackson, just nominated for an Oscar for directing the highly successful Lord Of The Rings, will mention me in his acceptance speech!

As previously mentioned, I 'inspired' Peter by showing him around Elstree Studios 14 years ago, but I bet he forgets.

I think it is splendid that The Venue employs, shall we say, heavy-looking lifeguards, like Ricky and Matt.

If they can sport spare tyres and love handles, it must be an encouragement to the less fit customers!

By contrast, I am plagued by a drop dead gorgeous physique, which causes people to constantly ask the secret of my fitness success.

I put in down to the step aerobics at The Venue and Hawksmoor Centre, as I never use the lifts to the first floor bars.

Since the days of Valentino, male stars are supposed to look flawless. From Gable to Brad Pitt, audiences have wanted their idols to look perfect.

Thank heavens Michael Caine helped even out the playing field a bit in the 1960s by wearing glasses like real people.

I met Michael at Elstree many years ago when he was making The Fourth Protocol.

I recall we had our photo taken together, looking at an old photograph of the studio, but I no longer remember what we talked about.

My only other memories of him was being taller than I expected and that he enjoyed smoking cigars.

Michael came into films around the same time as Sean Connery and Roger Moore, and they have all survived the ups and downs of stardom, while others faded from the spotlight.

I still think they should do a regular television programme along the lines of 'where are they now'.

It would appeal to us more mature folk with laughter lines, more 'flexible' stomach muscles and wider partings.

It would be wasted on Matt and Ricky who, when I used the expression 'in like Flynn', had never heard of Errol Flynn!

Errol made several movies in Borehamwood during the early 1950s, towards the end of his career.

Herbert Wilcox oddly cast Errol in two films opposite Anna Neagle, which seemed strange casting when considering their contrasting screen images.

Apparently Errol took the roles as he was in dire financial straits and his career in Hollywood was all but over.

Two decades earlier he had done a screen test at Elstree for Warner Brothers which led to his first Hollywood starring role in Captain Blood, followed by various swashbuckling roles, including Robin Hood, that turned him into a romantic idol.

In those days screen hearthrobs like Flynn, William Powell, David Niven and Ronald Colman all sported moustaches, and I keep that legacy alive!

Sadly Errol's health and career continued to decline.

A few years ago his Warner Brothers co-star, the lovely Olivia DeHavilland, told me: "I had not seen Errol for several years when I felt a tap on my shoulder at a reception.

"I turned and for a moment did not recognise Errol.

"He had aged and his eyes seemed dead compared with that michievous twinkle I remembered."

His self-destructive nature meant he died young, but I guess he enjoyed life and that's not bad.

Finally, I was sad to hear that TV's Van der Valk actor Barry Foster has died from a heart attack.

Barry attended our Elstree Film Evening a couple of years ago and will be sadly missed.
