Fire at derelict building

ISLE of Wight Fire and Rescue crews were called to a fire in a derelict building in Sandown this morning (Tuesday).

Three fire engines from Sandown, Shanklin and Ryde were sent to the scene in Melville Street after a call at 9.51am.

They were called to the fire at the boarded-up building by police.

Firefighters found just a handful of smouldering material in the building, which had been set light to.

The fire has been extinguished.

*A police spokeswoman said: "Police can confirm they notified Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service after reports of fire at a derelict property near Broadway, Sandown at 9.50am.

"The fire caused minor damage to the building.

"Two youths are assisting officers with their enquiries."
