Fire at former school

FIREFIGHTERS attended a small blaze in the grounds of a former Isle of Wight middle school last night (Saturday).

Crews were called to the old Swanmore Middle School site, at Ashey Road, Ryde, at 10.17pm, to extinguish a fire on the site.

They remained at the scene until 11pm.

Earlier in the evening, at 8.14pm, crews were called to an address in Whitcombe Road, near Carisbrooke, to extinguish a bonfire in a back garden.

It was initially believed the fire was on playing fields, however it is now understood to have broken out on an area where recent demolition work has been carried out.
