A FIRE broke out at a property in St John's Place, Newport this afternoon (Tuesday).

The blaze, reported at about 2pm, started in a room at the back of the three-storey terraced house and three Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service engines were sent to the scene.

Witness Kerrie Wells, 26, of Nelson Road, Newport, said: "I was walking home when I saw a group of men frantically trying to break down the front door of the property.

"As soon as they broke down the door, out billowed thick black smoke, it was really bad.

"The police told me they didn't think anyone was inside."

*Firefighters rescued two small dogs from the property.

Crew manager Lee Scrimshaw said: "We have no idea what caused the blaze at the moment. We are investigating."

He confirmed that no-one had been injured.
