A PARK with a troubled past is getting a new lease of life thanks to a regeneration programme aimed at boosting both it's appearance and reputation.

About 80 children from local schools spent three days planting 1,000 native hedge whips at Whitehall Open Space in Erith.

The hedges are just one of the many improvements being undertaken at the site, which has previously been dogged by problems with travellers, joy riders and litter.

New wooden bollards have already been installed along the perimeter of Whitehall Lane to deter potential joy riders, and 40,000 daffodils and crocuses have been planted this season.

Future improvements include better access and surfacing at the Bridge Road entrance, increased security and planting more trees and flowers.

Councillor Linda Bailey, cabinet member for environment, transport & regeneration, said: "The actions we have taken so far, and those planned for the future, will help to make the area more environmentally friendly and will encourage a variety of wildlife over time."
