STAFF and customers at the Co-operative in Rookley were evacuated after a fire broke out in the Main Road shop.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 3.14pm this afternoon (Sunday) and had the blaze under control by 4.54pm.
A fire and rescue service spokesperson said that a small fire had broken out in the ground floor of the building and the first floor flats sustained heavy smoke damage.
Nobody was injured as the shop was successfully evacuated and the flats were unoccupied, the spokesperson said.
Two fire engines initially attended the scene before a further two were called out for back up.
