Enfield 0 - Purfleet 0.

(Ryman Premier League).

By Pat Cunneen.

TONY Lazarou, the Enfield chairman, provided the only spark of excitement at Southbury Road on Saturday when he revealed the plans for the club's new ground at Tesco's Country Club in Cheshunt. On the pitch there was very little to get the adrenalin flowing in an awful game of football.Purfleet pulled nine men back behind the ball for most of the game, restricting the E's to long shots while much of the play was bogged down in the midfield.Lawrence should have opened the scoring for Purfleet but he blazed wide from ten yards while at the other end Leroy May was also in the business of spurning opportunities. He headed just over before missing the ball completely after Darren Annon had crossed low into the box moments later. There was little improvement in the second half although the E's started brightly and should have gone ahead.Williams crossed from the left and McGrath flicked the ball back for May whose header beat Purfleet's keeper but was cleared off the line by a defender who, luckily for him, directed the ball back into the arms of the keeper. At the other end, E's keeper Andy Pape was grateful when Lawrence headed against a post.Enfield: Pape, Annon, Cooper, McGrath, Terry, Moran, Williams, Darlington, Venables, Adams, May (Deadman). Subs not used: Carstairs, Jones.

ENFIELD'S youth team need just one more point to secure their League title despite a 1-0 defeat at Stevenage last Wednesday. They did not play anywhere near their full potential and lost by a single goal from the penalty spot to a much improved home side. But luckily for the E's, all of their closest rivals in the title race also slipped up leaving them almost certain to win the championship. The reserves are also feeling happy with themselves after beating Ware 2-1 in the Combination Cup semi-final on Saturday.Danny Wilson gave the E's the lead and Sean Nash got the winner in the dying moments to break Ware's hearts after they had equalised ten minutes from time. The final will be played at Southbury Road on a date to be arranged.
