FIREFIGHTERS on the Isle of Wight have joined colleagues around the country and called off planned strikes on Saturday night (19).
Members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) abandoned strike plans — due to take place between 6.30pm and 11.30pm — after government officials agreed to discussions.
Pete Mawhood, chair of the IW FBU, said: "As far as I can make out it looks as though employers, i.e. the government, have decided to talk to us and as a sign of goodwill we have called off the strike.
"Hopefully, we can get to a point where we can resolve the issues but if not, we will look at strike action in the future.
"It isn't something any of us wanted to do but we were pushed into a corner and felt we had to."
The talks are thought to be planned to take place over the weekend and into next week.
