A WEST Wight man who got himself wedged among rocks on an Isle of Wight beach was rescued by firefighters this afternoon.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called to Totland Bay at around 3.04pm following a 999 call from his partner.

Three fire crews - one from Freshwater and two from Newport - attended.

Members of the Freshwater crew manually lifted the local 22 year old man, who got wedged in among rocks near the old sea wall, to safety.

He suffered a minor ankle injury, but did not need medical assistance.

A fire service spokesman said: "The man was completely trapped, but we had time on our side as the tide was well out.

"Had the tide been in, it could've been difficult."

The fire crews returned to base at 3.47pm.
