Carshalton Athletic 1

Harlow Town 2

(Ryman Division One)

THE HAWKS put the recent disappointment of not being able to secure Dave Edwards' services as manger behind them with a good win that puts their promotion chances back on track.

Despite having the advantage of the strong wind behind them as they kicked off in a hail storm, Harlow were under pressure from the start.

Mark Hynes had already gone close on two occasions before he raced clear on 11 minutes, only to be thwarted at the last by a good block by James Hasell in the Hawks' goal.

So in terms of chances won and posession, it went rather against the run of play that Harlow took the lead ten minutes later.

A moved generated down the left by new signing Chris Wilson, saw the young full back release Martin Young, who cut into the box and fired in a low shot passed Stuart Searle at his near post to grab his ninth goal in ten games.

Harlow began to settle into the game and on 34 minutes Glenn Southgate had an effort from the edge of the area well saved by Searl.

But it was his opposite number Hasell who had to be at his best just a couple of minutes before the break when he was again quickly off his line to stop the onrushing Byron Glasgow.

Despite now playing into strong wind, the Hawks started in positive fashion after the interval and soon extended their lead on 56 minutes.

Southgate passed a neat ball out to John Coley on the right, who in turn swept in a good cross that was met with a perfect glancing header by Marvin Samuel from 12 yards out.

With the elements in their favour Carshalton had a number of chances to get back into the game, with arguably the best coming on 62 minutes when Neil Robson hit a cracking 30-yard volley which Hasell did well to turn over the bar.

But with the home defence being marshalled brilliantly by skipper Tony McNally, they were able to keep the home side at bay.

And it could have easily been three near the end when following a good Southgate free kick from the left, John Coley found space at the back post to fire in a header which was some how scrambled away Searl.

But not to be outdone Hasell again produced a great full length save on 90 minutes to deny Gary Elliott. And this looked to have secured him a clean sheet, but with the ref deciding to add five minutes of injury time it just wasn't to be and right at the death sub Orlando Hollingsworth netted from close range at the near post following a cross from Michael Johnson.

But it was to little to late as Harlow marched back into fifth spot with this win.

The Hawks now face Bognor Regis Town tonight (Wednesday) at home before entertaining Oxford City on Saturday.
