Flying boat graces Island skies

THIS was the stunning image enthusiasts wanted to capture over the Isle of Wight.

It records the only flying boat still in the air in this country, Catalina, above the iconic Union Jack hangar at Venture Quays, East Cowes.

The flight, captured for posterity on Wednesday, last week, was part of the Hawker 2013 Project, in which pilot Jeff Boyling flew around Britain.

It commemorated the centenary of Harry Hawker’s unsuccessful attempt to win the Daily Mail Prize for a round-Britain flight.

Hawker was test pilot for the Sopwith Bat-Boat being built by Saunders-Roe at East Cowes in March 1913. There is currently an exhibition in part of the company’s old hangar which houses the Classic Boat Museum Gallery.

In most of the 20th century the Isle of Wight had at least 2 airports that were thriving and even regualr air services in the 1930s. In the 21st Century we appear to be going backwards with aviation on the Island! No airshows and two small airports that appear to be on there last legs!Mr Sparrow of Sandown must be very pleased on Earth or in Heaven that there is no aircraft noise spoiling his day!
