THE FORMER Yarmouth Station which for many years was the town’s youth centre is set to be sold by the Isle of Wight Council for nearly £104,000.

The historic building which has been vacant for around 18 months was declared surplus to the Isle of Wight Council’s requirements in January this year following a review of youth service provision on the Island.

Marketing the building, which was in poor condition, began in January with a guide price of £50,000. However, interest in the site proved to be very strong according to a report, and a decision was taken to re-advertise the site in March. A further nine offers were received with £103,766 being the highest offer received.

A final decision to sell the site cannot be taken before Wednesday, next week, under delegated powers by Cllr George Brown, the Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet member for the economy.

A Tragedy that across the country Youth Work is being cut back at a time when young people need more support not less and as the Youth Worer that run the Yarmouth Youth Centre from 1977- 1984 approx it is sad to see the building sold off - and the young people raised the funds for the bench on the Station platform to allow people walking along the footpath a resting place to see the beautiful field and river so any attempts to remove that should be fought at all costs - the Cabinet should be ashamed of itself make sure you vote them out at the next election

I have come across so many instances of people who purchase oild railway properties and then spend the next few years trying to make it look totally unlike a a railway building. I will never understand ths mentality. It would be sad to see Yarmouth Station end up like this. Why not let the IOW steam railway have the property as an out post and possible museum?

Hopefully the new purchaser of this once proud railway station will endeavour to retain some of its railway features. It was and still is an important part of the islands railway history and as such deserves a sympathetic restoration. Fingers crossed. I look forward to seeing what transpires.
